Grades of Stainless Steel

Suncor Stainless mainly uses grade 304 and 316 stainless steel from the 300 series. Grade 304 and 316 are the most important members of the Austenitic family and are the most widely used. The Austenitic grades are generally nonmagnetic and hardenable only by cold working. However, they can be magnetic to a small degree, especially in formed parts.

Cleveland Mixer | Why Are Stainless Steel Castings Magnetic?

Ferritic stainless steels, such as 430 and CB-30 grades, are harder, less ductile, and magnetic due to their predominately ferrite makeup. Although ASTM grade CF8M and AISI 316 are both austenitic stainless steels, AISI 316 is nonmagnetic because it is essentially austenite. Cast 316 or CF8M is slightly magnetic, however, because it is not
